20 tweets I sent while fasting for the first time

When I fasted for my first time ever earlier this month, it was truly a challenge. I didn’t eat or drink water during the daylight hours in the way practicing Muslims do during Ramadan–although I only fasted for one day rather than an entire month. This was a totally new experience for me. Since I was raised Catholic, the closest thing I’d ever previously come to fasting was not eating meat on Fridays during Lent.

Things I learned from the experience:

1) Fasting means you can’t drink water which blew my mind. I had assumed I would keep the hunger at bay by drinking water and chewing gum all day but that wasn’t an option.

2) I really don’t know what it’s like to be truly hungry.

And finally…

3) Distracting myself from my hunger was the key to making it through the day.

Also, food is fantastic.
